Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Johnson is talking about why he thinks Warner Bros. and DC Studios didn’t make Black Adam 2 in the end. The actor, who worked for 15 years to get the first superhero movie made, says that a second one was scrapped because of a “vortex of new leadership.”
“There were so many changes in leadership while we were making Black Adam, developing it, and shooting it,” Johnson told Kevin Hart on a recent episode of Hart to Hart. “We got knocked down a little bit because of COVID and the shutdowns, but we got back up.” “When you have a company of that size, especially if it’s a publicly traded company, and there are a lot of changes in leadership, new people will come in and make decisions that you may not agree with from a philosophical point of view.”
He went on to say that Black Adam was “one of those movies that got caught in that web of new leadership” as a result of company changes that caused Warner Bros. to totally drop its Batgirl movie and DC Studios to hire James Gunn and Peter Safran as its new co-chairs in 2022.
But Johnson told Hart that he wasn’t the only one who didn’t understand why Black Adam was put on hold. He said, “I think that will always be one of the biggest mysteries, not just for me and us, but for everyone in our business.” “Because that’s a question for Kevin, but it came from Wall Street. It was a question from the movies.”
Johnson also talked about some of Black Adam’s accomplishments, like how well it did at the box office. “You are making up a new hero. You want the business to get bigger and bring Superman and Henry Cavill back from the dead. “The world went crazy,” he said, referring to the scene at the end of the movie where Cavill came back as Clark Kent. “And you and I—you were telling me this on opening weekend—made Black Adam part of a diverse portfolio of superheroes with only people of colour.
Johnson agreed that it was important to “look at and respect the bottom line economically,” but he said that things get harder when numbers are more important than getting people excited.
“When you think about opportunity and making new things and delivering for the audience, who is our number-one boss, it makes things a little harder, I think,” he said, “, especially for guys like you and me, where you go, ‘Are you sure you want to do this?'”
The move was compared to a change in leadership in sports by the former football player and pro wrestler. “It’s like if new owners bought a new NFL team and said, ‘Okay, not my head coach and not my quarterback. It doesn’t matter how many Super Bowls you’ve won. Not important how many rings we have. I’m not going with you.'”
Johnson said last December that he had met with Gunn and that Black Adam would “not be in their first chapter of storytelling,” but that “DC and Seven Bucks have agreed to continue looking into the best ways Black Adam can be used in future DC multiverse chapters.”
“These decisions made by James and the DC leadership show how they see DCU from a creative point of view,” he said. “Black Adam took 15 years of hard work, and I’m very proud of the movie we made for fans all over the world. I will always remember how fans responded to Black Adam with a lot of thanks, humility, and love.
