Instagram’s Threads App Reaches 100 Million Users within Five Days

In just five days, 100 million people have signed up for Instagram’s text-based app Threads. A report says that the Twitter-like service came out on June 6 (or June 5 in the Americas).

On the first day, Mark Zuckerberg said that 2 million people signed up for the app in two hours, 5 million in four hours, and 10 million in seven hours. The CEO of Meta said that more than 30 million people had signed up to try the new app the next morning. Even though it hasn’t started in the EU yet because of privacy concerns, Threads’ growth is interesting.

Up until now, OpenAI’s ChatGPT bot was one of the consumer goods with the fastest growth, with 10 million daily users in 40 days and 100 million monthly users in nearly two months. Even though Threads has only been around for a month, it has already reached 100 million people who use it every month. But the real task will be to keep users on the platform.

People are trying out Meta’s new text-based social platform, but there are some tools that aren’t there yet. Notably, the app doesn’t support ActivityPub, which is the technology used on decentralized networks to post updates. Even though Meta said it was working on it, the app won’t really be a part of the Fediverse until it is integrated.

Aside from that, the app has a web interface that can only be used to read posts. It also doesn’t allow post search, direct messages, hashtags, or a “Following” feed. Because of Instagram’s rules, nudity isn’t allowed on the app, but Bluesky, another Twitter option, welcomes it.

Still, getting to 100 million people in such a short amount of time is no easy task. So it seems like Threads will be around for a while.
